3053’s review :> Cold Mountain         Week: 2 Date: 31/07/22 Chapter(s): 2

Summary of my reading:

On the porch of someone’s house, Ada, The new owner of this house keeps writing her letter to someone that far away. But as soon as she finished it and read it again, she seems does not to like the message in her letter so she threw it away and looked in the kitchen garden where had been abandoned. This house and farm were officially owned by her after her dad’s funeral. She just sat there and waited for more obvious mountains from the morning fog. It was a very long time since the last meal, she only had appetizers to maintain her stomach. When she realized that she decided to get some eggs from the red hen in the barn. She sat above the big brush where the hen usually lay eggs, it reminded her of the old days when she was hiding in the brush. When she thought about what had happened to her recently, she wondered how her father had allowed her to grow up so impractical. She does not know anything about farm work because her dad, Monroe, sent her to Charleston and kept her far away from hard work, so she grew up in that place her dad also give her a high education than the usual girls so she received many passive skills like linguistic skills, sewing skills or art skills, but since she lost her dad all of those things were useless. She can’t live without him with her every passive skill that she got in this place. Suddenly, she got out of her mind because she saw the red hen flying pass at her face with rooster since Ada saw that she reflect by throwing her hand up to cover her face and started to escape but it was too slow because the rooster scratched her leg already. When she came back and sat on the armchair in front of the house she examined herself, she found that she got two wounds, one is on her wrist and the other one was on her leg. She climbed the stair to her room, washed up, and change her outfit. Ada took a book from her bedside table and read it in her father’s armchair by the window in the upper hall. It was three months since she spent time sitting and reading the book and asked herself every day “What have you achieved today?” and it always is “Nothing.”

The day that her dad, Monroe, died was in May that afternoon Ada prepare to go paint the flowers by the stream. As she left the house, she stopped to talk with Monroe who sat under the apple tree. He looked so tired and he said he would sleep and asked her to wake him when she came back. But god did not let Ada woke him up when she returned to awake him. She saw that he was laying with his eyes and mouth opened, she ran to him and try to shake him but she realized immediately that he was not with her anymore. Ada started running as fast as she can to the nearest neighbors, the Swangers. She arrived at their house exhaustively and cried when Esco Swanger and she came back to the cove, it was a very depressed and pathetic scene. At night, Ada stayed in the Swanger’s house, and in the two next days, she buried Monroe on the Pigeon River. On that day Ada want to go back to her place but Mrs. Swanger said that she should with them until she really feels alright to leave. Three days after staying with the Swangers. she returned to the place where she lost her dad. It was a brave decision because it was still fighting in the southern states. The Feds were just over the mountains to the north. And according to the news Feds would soon come south looking for food and take anything that they want without any shame.

At Monroe’s grave, Ada stopped and take a rest by the rock. She looked at the Cold Mountain. Now, she only thinks about her future shouldn’t she go back to Charleston or stay here at the farm? Six years ago, Her dad and she had come here to find a cure for Monroe’s illness. His doctor advised him to live in the mountains, and he found a mountain church where he could also live as a preacher. Before they got the recent house, they have to sell their old house in Charleston to buy the new one at the cove from the Black family. At present, still seated by the rock, Ada took a letter from her pocket. It’s from her father’s lawyer, it said that they almost got no income from the crops. She felt hopeless and worn out when she reached the stone wall her favorite spot on the farm. She kept the letter and took her book from her pocket then settled herself against the wall and read it until she fell asleep. She woke up in the darkness but yet saw a half-moon in the sky. She had never spent a night in the woods alone before, she was less frightened than she expected. In her mind, she repeatedly considered the possibilities.

She returned to her house in the early morning and was sitting on the porch, and wonder what was she supposed to do when she saw the figure walking up to her. She was thin yet looked strong, she was black and wore no shoes. She sat next to Ada without any permission and took some time for having a conversation with her. The girl’s name is “Ruby”, she was strong enough to do farm jobs and she obviously willed help with no pay. As they talked, the rooster who attacked Ada yesterday, stopped walking and staring at them. Ada told Ruby about what happened to her yesterday. In the very next second, The things that Rudy did with that rooster were beyond expectation. By dinnertime, Ada does not have to starve with her hardtack anymore.

My opinion:

First of all, I thought Ada’s life was jealous because she could live in a place that was so extended without any toxicity or pollution, but I was wrong. Now I wish her to have every good day since she met Ruby. And can miss the way that the writer describes the atmosphere or the feeling of the characters. My favorite part would be the night that Ada woke up in the darkness lonely but she still has some friends when she looked up to the sky. I love how the writer says that she wasn’t that scared in the woods even though she was alone. This chapter was pretty different from the previous. The first chapter encouraged me the feeling like do anything or try any way that we could survive from being dead in this place. But in this chapter, all of this part, everything was slowed down, the stream, the living of the village, even the morning fog. Everything before the main action happened was slow life, I think this chapter is my first favorite like love at first sight. 👍🏻
