After Ada and Ruby had met each other already, they made a deal about their living part. Their condition was, that Number one Ruby wanted to live by herself, so she offered that she would like to stay at the old cabin near Ada’s house, Number two Ada had to learn everything about farm stuff, no matter how hard or dirty it was. All time on the first day, they spent time together planning to renovate an abandoned cornfield. Ada noticed that Ruby was constantly talking about the farm such as planting some more kinds of vegetables or buying more domestic animals, and she also talked about the most emergency situation. All the plans wouldn’t be able to go through well if they got no money. Luckily in Black Cove, there were a lot of apple trees, and also tobacco plants that were growing so strong and tall, so they could sell them for purchasing new seeds and salt, and they also could buy something that they couldn’t produce.
The day after they went into a town, then they were shocked by the pricy small packet of needles like the price of the cloth. So Rudy said we could make cloth if we had sheep, at the moment Ada’s only thought was money made everything so much easier. But now, while the war still was encountered, the owner didn’t want that paper. It would be a wiser way to exchange things with things, not thongs with money. So Ada didn’t wonder why Ruby did not keep money more than one dollar when people could hunt each other for that, especially now when money almost had no value in itself. As a result, Ruby planned that Ada should sell either the carriage or her piano. So she decided to sell the piano for the reason that she had no time to spend with it anymore if she wanted to change her farm. As soon as she had decided, Ruby wasted no time and exchanged it with Old Johnes who lived on the East Fork and his wife also wanted the piano. Rudy came back home with the fine pig, half a dozen sheep, and large quantities of cornmeal, green vegetables, and smoked meat. Ada who sat on the porch saw that, she didn’t regret losing it much, but it reminded her instead.
In the early evening of Christmas, before the war occurred, there was a party, consisting of many people in the room. Ada was one of them; she was sitting with the women, but she wasn’t focused on them at all. She was observing around the room. Until the time when she and Mrs. Swanger got too many glasses of wine, Sally came closer to Ada and said That Inman boy’s just got here. I shouldn’t say this, but you ought to marry him. The two of you’d make pretty brown-eyed babies, which made Ada’s face and neck red, so she went to the kitchen to calm herself. But the thing was worsening when she suddenly saw Inman in the kitchen, sitting with his legs crossed in the stove corner, drying his wet black suit. Like everything was set by someone, Ada felt dizzy, and just took a few unsteady steps while Inman was half stood. In the next scene, Inman’s lap was a chair for Ada who was falling into him. Her brain didn’t let her keep the secret, she said aloud she never wanted to leave this place. As Ada finished her words, Inman looked satisfied even more than her. After being shy and satisfied, they both get out of the kitchen, Ada went to play piano, followed by Inman standing leaning against the door before moving for talking with his friends and left the party early.
The present, since Ada was living with Ruby, everything was more steady. They had their schedule every single day, if they didn’t do a big thing, at least they would do many little things instead. They slowly change each other a little bit. Ada learned farm work, in common sense that if she didn't do all of those things, Ruby would leave her alone, and Ruby did many things to learn to be able literate. At first, Ada tried to teach Ruby about herself, so that was how Ada know everything about Ruby. Ruby had never met her mom since she was born, and her dad was an alcoholic. So she had to look after herself since she started to walk, that’s why Ruby could do everything that usual girls can’t do.

My opinion:
I like the 3 parts of this chapter, First one was when the writer used foreshadowing about the piano to mention the past of the main characters. The second part was the way that the writer described and created every scene about Ada and Inman, plus the mood in the situation, it made everything get pinkish and heart-warming feelings. In the last part, I like the fact that Ruby and Ada exchanged some parts of themselves to upgrade each other’s life, without any bad purposes.
