Summary of my reading:
The story of chapter five is about the journey of Inman after he walked away from the villages. He escaped from the Home Guard fearfully and carefully. Along the way, he thought of the great moment when he met Ada for Christmas four years ago. Soon, Inman met with the preacher who had tried with a tree. The preacher would travel with him even though Inman did not accept it. When they walked for a long time, they saw a man named Junior who was trying to move a large dead cow. They helped him move the cow by using a saw which they found to cut the cow into pieces to make it easier to move. When they finished, Junior invited Inman and the preacher to have a drink at his house, but it was his plan to prevent them from escaping. Inman and the preacher are therefore caught up in Junior's plans to cooperate with the Home Guard. Inman and the preacher were tied with a long rope with several other men. After the prisoners walked for several days, the leader of the Home Guards decided to kill every prisoner, but Inman survived that event. Inman looked for a way to escape and met the yellow slave. He invited Inman to go with him to heal. When Inman recovered, the slave gave him good directions on the map. He continued his journey. Several nights later, he returned to find his knapsack and attacked Junior.

My opinion:

This chapter clearly presents an obstacle to Inman when he walks to his home. He faces many problems, but he never gives up and tries to overcome them by himself, because he has a great goal waiting for him to achieve it. Although Inman is a stubborn man, he has a golden heart and gives an opportunity to everyone because he forgives anyone who has done something wrong in the past, and they are ready to become a good person, like the preacher. He does not kill Junior, who deserves to die, but he only attacks him to teach him that what he is doing is a terrible thing. The Inman's kindness to everyone makes him become a credulous man because he believes in the utterances of Junior more than in his actions. It can teach us that we should give a chance to anyone who ought to deserve it and understand the truth of ethics about what goes around comes around, and we must use consciousness to evaluate their speech and actions because they can bring disaster to us. Inman is an impassible person because he does not feel anything when he sees the corpse around him anymore. The preacher is ashamed of what he has done in the past because he has turned himself into a great person, and he uses his body to help Inman from the bullets in the last moments of his life. It teaches us that when we do something wrong, we should confess and correct what we have done. Next, this story teaches us about the small-mindedness of humans. Junior is so selfish and inhumane that he can betray anyone who helps him without regret and only cares about money and himself, so he is a very immoral person. It can teach us that we should not betray others for unsuitable reasons and must have shame of sins all the time to do something. Junior tries to make confidence with Inman through his speech. Conversely, the yellow slave does not speak a lot, but he uses his trust to exchange with the Inman's trust. We have also learned about honesty from this story. We should gain trust from others through our actions rather than our speech, because actions can tell us about the true characteristics of people, while speech can cover them to us. Finally, we have also learned about the domination of the person. The Home Guards have the power to make someone’s life free or die by themselves. It is the worst thing in our lives because we should have the authority to live and do anything in the world by ourselves without someone's regulation.
