My opinion:
These chapters clearly present the first time Inman and Ada met after Inman went to be a hire soldier in the American Civil Wars. When criticized by using the formalist or structural approach, the line that "Later, Ada and Inman lay holding each other as the branches smoked in the fire and the snow whispered as it fell." The author uses similes to describe the situation in this scene clearly. In this line, use similes within the phrases "Ada and Inman lay holding each other as the branches smoked in the fire" to narrate the actions of Ada and Inman that hugged each other among the warm from a fire in the cabin like branches of a tree that was smoked in the fire, and "the snow whispered as it fell" to describe the setting of that situation, which at that time had a sound of the wind very softly that could tell the snow would fall to the ground presently. Moreover, this phrase does not use only similes, but it also uses personification, because personification is the making of nonhuman things that can have aspects or actions like humans. Use the phrase "the snow whispered as it fell" to illustrate it clearly, because the snow is a nonhuman thing and cannot whisper like humans. It can describe the weather of that scene, in which the snow will fall on the ground shortly. In addition, the author uses the symbol in the line "Not for all the gold dollars in the world." quotes an idiom, "Not for all the tea in China". It is usually used to say that nothing could persuade you to do something, but the author uses the gold dollars in the world to represent the tea in China, because the gold dollars are the symbol and currency of America that are used around the world, and the author modifies the greatness of the speech by adding in the world to increase the quality of the gold dollars. So, this line implies that there is no reason or incentive to exchange this moment for anything or anyone. Then, based on the moralist and reader-response theories, Inman was an honest and willful person because he did anything by setting a goal with determination and steadiness. He came back to Blackcove and did everything to fulfill the promise that he had made to Ada before he went to war in the American Civil War, although he faced many dangerous problems that could have killed him. He always expected to succeed in the goal that he set. When he failed, he would despair and did not know what to do next, like in the scene which he met Ada, but she could not remember him and distrusted him. It can teach us that we should set ourselves some goals. We must try to do something to overcome many problems by ourselves. When you feel frustrated, take a break and keep going. Inman has a golden heart for everyone because he gave water to Stobrod, although he did not know who he was. We learn to do something well with everyone without expecting any profit because money or anything else is not more essential than the kindness of people. Ada and Ruby were dutiful women because they did not leave anyone who helped them, even if the best of them was small. Ruby was grateful to her father, although he had left her to survive alone when she was young. When Stobrod fell into a dangerous situation and got sick, she quickly helped or healed him without thinking about his regret in the past. As for Ada, she was grateful to Ruby because she thought she was her best friend, who was still with her anytime she wanted someone to heal herself all life's sorrows and delights. It can teach us about being grateful to someone who was a benefactor to us. We should be grateful to all our benefactors sincerely and devotedly all the time that we can. We must be grateful to our parents all the time, even though they do not want anything from us, because they are necessary people in our lives. They do anything for us as they nurture us from the day we were born until now without expecting anything in return. So, we should take care of them and not make them worry or sad. The little thing that we can do for them is improved ourselves to be great people in society. Finally, we learn about Adoration. Nowadays, people do not understand and never seriously consider love, making it confusing to look at love. It has various ways of describing it. Adoration can happen to anyone and take various forms. For me, the definition of love is the happiness of humans. It can be a tool to make people happy in society. Some people may have happiness when they receive love. Conversely, they may be happy when giving happiness to someone who deserves it. Others may not want to give or receive love from anyone but may want it from themselves only. Moreover, adoration can happen in all relationships. Whatever the relationship between parents and daughter or son, as in the love of Stobrod and Ruby, lovers as in the love of Ada and Inman, and friends as in the friendship of Ada and Ruby, all of this is called love.
