3053’s review :|   Week: 9 Date: 27/09/22 Chapter(s): 9

Summary of my reading:

The story in chapter nine is about the journey to look for the next cave where they could live in the winter of Stobrod and his two companions, Pangle, and Georgian boy. While they walked for a long time, they decided to set a fire to cook and rest. Suddenly, the Home Guard met and asked them about a group of outcasts, but Stobrod avoided them. Then, Teague joined them to eat breakfast. He decided to kill them because he thought they were outcasts, but the Georgian Boy did not stay there. The Georgian boy saw and heard when they were shot, so he ran down the mountain to tell Ruby. When Ruby heard that, she and Ada quickly went to that place to help them or take their corpses to the grave, although the snow was falling hard. Ruby saw Pangle's corpse, but her father was seriously injured. She quickly helped and took him to her home with difficulty.

My opinion:

This chapter obviously presents the Home Guard shooting Stobrod and Pangle in the mountains. Criticize by using the moralist and reader-response theory. Stobrod was an intent and resourceful man because he was not downhearted about walking to look for the cave and encouraged his companions along the way, although he did not know both what they must do and where they could go next. When he faced the Home Guard, he did not feel nervous or afraid of them, even though he was so afraid they would catch up with his actions. He always acted like a general person to conceal that he and his friends were an outcast group for the Home Guard, such as giving breakfast and playing music for them without rebelling. Not only was Stobrod a resourceful and intent person, but Pangle was also an obedient and transparent person because he complied with everything Stobrod did, like the scene when the Home Guard asked them to play music for them. He did not refuse and played the fiddle with Stobrod joyfully. Although he would be shot by the Home Guard, he always smiled and had happiness. He was not the least bit afraid of the bullet that could kill him immediately. It can teach us that when we are in danger or facing an obstacle, we should get a grip because awareness can help us to have the knowledge to get ourselves out of that situation and think about what we must do next to survive and reduce the problem more than now. After that, we should follow the orders of someone who we have confidence in when we fall into danger because they can help us to survive with them. When we have confidence in someone, their assistant will actually help us. Moreover, sometimes we need to pretend to be someone who is appropriate to deserve it because everyone in the world can not do anything without being honest with others all the time. Next, Ruby and Georgian Boy were impatient people because both of them did something without thinking or analyzing what should be done next carefully. The Georgian Boy went to tell Ruby and Ada immediately when he saw Stobrod and Pangle were shot by the Home Guard without analyzing carefully, making some parts of the news incorrect, as Ruby went out to the scene of the crime with her father immediately when she heard the news from the Georgian Boy, without thinking that she was a woman and reckless with someone who could attack and sexually abuse her. We learn about the slovenly of humans. We always do anything with everyone by thinking thoroughly and carefully, because it can help us to be cautious people. When we are caring people, we will do anything perfect and better than now. Conversely, it can make us think or do things repeatedly all the time. When we think or do something, again and again, we expect everything we do. When we face disappointment, we put more stress and sadness on each other every day of our lives. Finally, this story teaches us about the inhumane domination of humans. The Home Guards have the power to make someone’s life free or die by themselves. It is the worst thing in our lives because we should have the authority to live and do anything in the world by ourselves without someone's regulation. The Home Guards were so cruel and brutal that they could kill Stobrod and Pangle, who gave breakfast and played music for them, so they were very immoral people. It can teach us that we should not attack others and must have shame of sins all the time to do something.
